The dilemma for artists using chalk based pastel is whether to fix or not.
On the one hand, fixative sprays can spot, leaving ugly marks, darken or discolour the artwork.
On the other hand, unfixed particles can trickle down discolouring the mountcard or transferring by electrostatic to the inside of the glass, forming a ghost image.
We have found that dry-mounting not only keeps the artwork flat, but also effectively ‘fixes’ the pastel by compressing the particles into the fibres of the pastel paper. We can also recommend the use of a 5 mm spacer under the mountcard which stops any particles from transferring to the glass and acts as an invisible tray for any fallen particles.
